Pharmacists Help Reduce Hospital Costs and Improve Safety with Clinical Interventions
Quantifi users documented more than 2 million interventions in first quarter 2009
BELLEVUE, WA, April 16, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pharmacy OneSource, Inc., software as a service provider to more than 1,300 hospitals in the United States, announced today that its Quantifi clinical documentation program continues to be successful in helping clients show cost savings, establish benchmarks and trend clinical and quality pharmacy activities. Pharmacy OneSource has 43,118 users currently documenting in Quantifi who have recorded more than $116 million in cost savings in the first quarter of 2009.
"Quantifi has given Mercy Medical Center an accurate and consistent manner in which to report and track pharmacist interventions," said Desmond Waters, Director of Pharmacy at Mercy Medical Center. "It also gives our pharmacy robust reporting in order to make real-time, informative patient care decisions."
Quantifi users documented 2,082,301 interventions last quarter, which were associated with $12,074,578 actual dollar and $104,235,962 in risk avoidance savings by pharmacists through intervention. Real reduction in supply costs (such as a switch from atorvastatin to simvistatin) is an example of actual dollar savings; where avoided potential costs (an adverse drug event or an extended length of stay) represent risk avoidance savings.
Here are the Top Five Drugs associated with an adverse drug reaction recorded in Quantifi last quarter, and the total number of reports for each:
Warfarin 2119
Morphine Sulfate 694
Hydromorphone 509
Insulin Preparations 487
Vancomycin 363
With more than 800 hospitals across the world using Quantifi, and more than 20 million clinical interventions, adverse events and adverse drug reactions documented, Pharmacy OneSource understands the potential to increase the credibility of pharmacy numbers in the eyes of the hospital administrators.
"The software gives high visibility to the cognitive services we provide," Carlo Lupano, Pharmacy Manager at The Valley Hospital, told Health Data Management. "It is a way to keep track of the high performers, the people providing exemplary service to the patients."
Quantifi allows pharmacists to document their clinical interventions, adverse events and drug reactions quickly over the internet or on a handheld computer through a series of menus, drop-lists, and input screens, collecting crucial event data easily. In addition, Quantifi users have the ability to follow-up on their reports or the reports done by their peers. Quantifi administrators easily generate executive level reports and detailed managerial reports to support clinical and quality improvement activities.
