Big Fig Design Launches Ligature Online
An innovative micro-site by and about artists making unusual connections


    SEATTLE, WA, October 22, 2008 /Washington News Articles/ -- Big Fig Design (www.bigfigdesigngroup.com) today launched the beta version of an innovative new online exhibition venue, Ligature Online (www.bigfigdesigngroup.com/1.0/Ligature). Each month Ligature will host an artist whose work and way of thinking makes interesting or unusual connections; designer as storyteller, writer as illustrator, sculptor as playwright, or poet as seamstress. The format and content will be left to each artist, as LIgature is designed to provide a space for artists to present and discuss their own work in their own way. Artists already slated to exhibit include Susan Andrade, Barbara Kosoff, Susan Benarcik Pete Benarcik, Dan Glassman, John Beach and Dave Straus.

Ligature #1 features designer and illustrator Susan Andrade. Whether it's monsters, talking chickens, clown-like neighbors or lactose intolerant aliens, designer and illustrator Susan Andrade finds inspiration through storytelling. While many artists have stunning technical skills, and others are strong conceptual thinkers; Susan is both.

Often artists have a "look" and as such are hired to be just the right fit for a given project. One of the reasons we love Susan's work so much is that she moves easily between both media (illustration, photography, computer-based) and style (masculine, feminine, child and adult). We are thrilled to feature Susan Andrade in this first installment of Ligature.

"I love characters," says Andrade, "made up, down the street and right around the corner. Quirks and funny detail are right in front of us. Sometimes art can be magic. Sometimes art is fancy. Sometimes I create art so lovely it makes me want to fake cry. But I like art that makes me laugh."

Ligature Online evolved as a natural extension of Big Fig Design's redesigned website. As a corporate web presence, the Big Fig site is difficult to categorize. Part showcase, part archive, part experiment, the site gathers all of Big Fig's business ventures and research projects under one heading, one of which is Ligature.

"We were looking for a way to tell others about some of the great people we work with on a daily basis but who haven't had the exposure we think they deserve," said Daniel Flahiff, founder and principal at Big Fig. "Not that Ligature will make anyone famous, but we wanted to do something. There is so much great talent we run across on a daily basis that we really wanted to spread the word about. We wanted to 'share the love' as Julie says, and this seemed the most logical and fun way to do it."
